Promoting Connections: Roraima and Guyana
by: Stanley Ming
“Anibal Pereira Lucena is the person who had a motorcycle parts shop ‘Casa Moto Pecas’ in Boa Vista. One day during the 1970s, he walked into T. Geddes Grant on Main Street, Georgetown, where l was the salesman for Yamaha motorcycles.
I subsequently went to Boa Vista for the first time around 1972, to introduce / launch Yamaha motorcycles there, as at that time, there were only Honda motorcycles, which were manufactured in Manaus. I also trained a few mechanics for him to service and repair motorcycles.
__
The highlight of the launching was, the construction of a wooden ramp which was placed in an open field, and a large ring was installed beyond the elevated end of the ramp, which was about 10 ft. high.
__
Thousands of handbills were dropped from a small aircraft over the town, and a very large number of people turned up the Saturday afternoon, to witness me riding a Yamaha motorcycle at about 40 mph along the ground, up the ramp and then jumping through the ring which was set on fire.

I had a lot of fun and became an instant celebrity !
I had practiced and done a similar stunt in Guyana earlier, when a ramp was built at Durban Park, and motorcars placed beyond the ramp. Then with my brother Colin lying on top one, l jumped over them, ‘A la Evel Kenivel.’
It was all calculated, as l designed the ramp and determined the slope angle, speed etc. that was necessary, in order to traverse the distance through the air, to comfortably clear the cars.”
